Cut from the Same Cloth (2022)

Made with compressed handmade charcoal and linen fabric
1m X 2m

“Cut From The Same Cloth” (2022) is a large-scale family portrait in compressed charcoal on linen, based on an old photograph of my grandmother and her family. Charcoal, made from trees, symbolises lineage and family trees, while linen reflects my family’s history with textiles, as my grandmother was a seamstress, and my sisters continue this tradition. The fabric recalls traditional tapestries of figures of significance, while its draped, monochromatic form evokes the warmth of old black-and-white photographs. Through material and memory, I reflect on how the past shapes identity and how history, if unacknowledged, repeats itself.
